Art, in its truest form, is an expression of our feelings, ideas and emotions. Painting, drawing, sculpting are all processes used to create true art. For children, however, art is something they DO… that in an of itself, makes it a process. The art that kids create is unique to the who they are as individuals. For that reason, Paint and Pages is based on some "Process Art" principles but also encourages fine art exploration and instruction.
Students will not create cookie-cutter art nor copy paintings from books. Students are taught how to see the world around them and apply their learning to their work. They will emulate the art of illustrators and artists in the world. They will put themselves in the art they create.
Artists will be encouraged to express themselves freely while making their creations. They will develop fine art skills through the use of a variety of mediums and techniques. Artists will be taught the fundamentals of drawing and painting, develop an appreciation of art and artists, and be encouraged to show creative expression.
Andrea Diagonale, (yup, just like "Diagon Alley" in Harry Potter) is the owner and creative director/instructor of Paint and Pages. She is endlessly inspired by the creativity, joy, and imagination of children. She has over 30 years of elementary teaching experience in public and private settings in New York, Maryland, Virginia, and North Carolina.
In addition to her love for kid art and kid books, she has a soft spot for snow, gardening, organizing, harmonica solos, whippy songs, and dark chocolate.
My Teaching Philosophy
I believe that everyone is creative and that it only takes one class, workshop, artist talk, or gallery showing, to re-ignite or liberate that creativity; and I believe that creativity and art-making of all kinds, taps into and accesses important parts of the brain we do not give ourselves enough opportunities to flex and enjoy in our busy lives.
